CODIS and NDIS Update

CODIS and NDIS Update

The Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, has matured into a program supporting DNA databases in law enforcement laboratories across the United States.  Internationally, there are also 106 CODIS sites in 58 countries.  As DNA database programs evolve, the CODIS software has and will continue to accommodate the changing needs of the DNA community.

A major component of the CODIS program is operation of the National DNA Index System, or NDIS.  NDIS is also referred to as the National DNA Database.  This national index is made up of over 200 DNA laboratories from all 50 States as well as the United States Department of Justice, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the United States Army Crime Laboratory.  Currently there are over 18.8 million offender DNA profiles and over 1.0 million crime scene DNA profiles stored in NDIS.  The use of the CODIS software has resulted in over 540,000 investigations aided.

An update will be provided on the status of the National DNA Index System and future updates and capabilities to the CODIS software.
