The Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, has matured into a program supporting DNA databases in law enforcement laboratories across the United States. Internationally, there are also 125 CODIS sites in 61 countries. As DNA database programs evolve, the CODIS software has and will continue to accommodate the changing needs of the DNA community.
A major component of the CODIS program is operation of the National DNA Index System, or NDIS. NDIS is also referred to as the National DNA Database. This national index is made up of over 200 DNA laboratories from all 50 States as well as the United States Department of Justice, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the United States Army Crime Laboratory. Currently there are over 22.5 million offender DNA profiles and over 1.3 million crime scene DNA profiles stored in NDIS. The use of the CODIS software has resulted in over 680,000 investigations aided.
An update will be provided on the status of the National DNA Index System programs, and future updates and capabilities to the CODIS software.

Ms. Grossweiler is the National DNA Index System Program Manager in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's CODIS Unit. Lisa has over 33 years of experience in the forensic DNA field, serving in the private and public sectors. She joined the Federal DNA Database Unit of the FBI Laboratory in 2010 as a DNA Examiner and in 2019 transferred to the CODIS Unit where she accepted her current role as NDIS Custodian.
