The United States alone has witnessed 195 mass fatality incidents since the year 2000.  For most of us, this will be the largest and most difficult thing we work on.  The panel will take you through the hardship and perseverance, covering success and failures that forever impacted their agencies, careers and lives.  The discussion will include recommendations to prepare and focus on innovations in technology, inter-agency coordination, international standards, and the psychological impact on victims’ families, as well as your own team.

Mark Desire

Assistant Director, New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner

Mark Desire is an Assistant Director with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. He works in the Department of Forensic Biology, New York City’s DNA crime lab and the largest of its kind in North America. During his 27 years of employment, he has investigated thousands of criminal and missing persons cases. He is the manager of the World Trade Center DNA Identification Team, a unit dedicated to advancing the science and helping return loved ones to their families.

Kimberly Gin

Retired Coroner, Sacramento County

Kimberly Gin retired from her role as Coroner for Sacramento County in 2022 and now runs her own consultancy, Kim Gin Professional Solutions, LLC. As the First Past President of the California State Coroners' Association and a member of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, she is well-regarded in her field. Her notable achievements include utilizing Rapid DNA to identify disaster victims in the Camp Fire and Santa Barbara Dive Boat Fire and using Investigative Genetic Genealogy to solve multiple cold cases.

Nir Adam Sharon

DNA Analyst, Israeli National Center of Forensic Medicine

Nir Adam Sharon is a DNA Analyst in the Israeli National Center of Forensic Medicine since 2016, where he processes, files reports and has occasionally testified in hundreds of forensic criminal cases as well as human identification cases, including several mass casualty events.
