In 2020, we’re taking a break from the west coast and ‘mooving’ to San Antonio, Texas for ISHI 31. While foodies already know a taste of what San Antonio has to offer, those who have never been will find that there is a lot to explore as well.

San Antonio, Texas was originally founded as a Spanish Mission and colonial outpost in 1718, and it’s Spanish roots are still evident today. It may have started as a small outpost, but rapid growth has led to San Antonio being the seventh most populous city in the United States today, and host to 32 million tourists each year.
One landmark you may be familiar with is the Alamo. Located in downtown San Antonio, over 2.5 million people visit the complex each year. For over 300 years, the Alamo has stood as a testament to Texas history. It was here that the Spanish colonization first took hold, where Mexico armed its independence, and (most famously) where a small group of Texans held out for 13 days against General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Though they ultimately fell, the Alamo still stands for courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty.
Another ‘must see’ is the River Walk. One of the most visited sites in Texas, the River Walk provides scenic pathways and waterways to San Antonio’s cultural and historic sites and is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and bars. In the summer, you can expect to hear folklorico and flamenco music filling the air.
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, there are plenty of areas where kayaking and hiking await you. One option is the Natural Bridge Caverns, where tours offer you the chance to explore underground chambers filled with natural formations.
For those who are looking for a more relaxing excursion, check out a local winery. There are three vineyards close to the conference hotel that offer tours and tastings. Or, if you’re hoping for some retail therapy, there is an outlet mall close by as well.
The 31st International Symposium on Human Identification will be held at the JW Marriott Hill Country. Located 14 miles from the San Antonio International Airport, the JW Marriott provides guests with six unique dining experiences, and the opportunity to unwind after the day’s sessions. Whether you prefer to relax at the spa, explore the nine-acre water park, or take in a round of golf, the JW Marriott has it all.
Save the date for September 14 – 17, 2020!
